Due to rising costs, many Americans are looking for ways to save money, and a surprising solution is emerging: relocation packages from attractive and affordable US cities and towns.

These programs, called worker relocation incentives, are designed to attract remote workers with financial rewards and additional perks. Think cash bonuses (some exceeding $10,000), free memberships to co-working spaces, home buying assistance and even a meet-and-greet with the mayor.

This trend is booming. According to MakeMyMove, a platform connecting remote workers with these opportunities, the number of participating communities has skyrocketed in recent years. Fueled by the pandemic’s shift to remote work, over 50,000 people applied for programs through MakeMyMove in 2023 alone.

Elio, a Sales Account Executive of URL Media is just one example of someone who took advantage of the program after coming across an ad for MakeMyMove.

“Last year when I was traveling through Central America and Europe one of the things that really stood out to me was how closely connected everyone was in those countries,” he said. “Everyone knew everyone at the bodega or the corner store and I wanted to find a community where I felt the same type of connectedness.”

In addition to the financial incentives, these communities promise a thriving work-life balance, a strong sense of belonging and a chance to experience a fresh start. Some of the destinations offering relocation incentives of at least $5,000 include:

Elio, who settled on South Bend as his new home explains, “I think with me being a person of color moving to South Bend, a lot of people didn’t know, or they’re not educated on how great the Midwest is and how accepting it is towards people of color. I want to buy a house here. I’m at the age where my priorities are different, and moving to a small town like this means being able to look at houses and not feel like I’m going to go into debt for the rest of my life to own something.”
