Can we get real for a moment?
We spend months during election season obsessing over politicians, but we barely pay attention to the people on the ground on Election Day.
Their jobs are tough. In some places, just showing up to work or volunteer at the polls can put you in danger.
And that’s happening in a climate when voting rights in general are being chipped away. We’re seeing voter rolls purged and neighborhood polling places shut down.
All of which makes it harder for poll workers, who have to be the ones in the school gym or public library looking neighbors in the eyes to explain why they can’t cast a ballot after thirty years in the same place.
In the last few elections, the pressures they face exploded. The Department of Justice had to create a special team in 2023 to keep track of the threats and harassment aimed at poll workers. After President Donald Trump and his allies started spreading wild conspiracy theories and threatening lawsuits, doing a simple civic job can put a target on your back.
In particular, election workers who serve communities of color face a disproportionate amount of harassment and threats, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.
But they still do the work so all registered voters have a chance to cast ballots.
They are the people who make Election Day work. And when the folks working at your polling place are from your neighborhood and speak your language, it can make the whole voting process feel a lot easier.
Poll workers play a critical role in strengthening public trust. Misinformation can thrive when people don’t feel connected to the systems that affect their lives. Seeing familiar people from the community at an Election Day check-in table can bring relief to nervous voters.
Working at a polling place or helping neighbors with ballots is one of the most hands-on ways to protect the right to vote.
