In the almost week since the assassination attempt on Trump, Republican leaders have rallied around a peculiar message: unity. But their rhetoric rings hollow. Party members have engaged in behavior undermining the contention that there’s a desire for togetherness. These empty calls for comity also downplay the political violence and racial tensions that the former president and his allies have inflamed, and smother valid criticism of the party.
