Money & the Middle sits in the in-between — between childhood lessons and adult choices, between responsibility and possibility. It’s sometimes a mirror, sometimes a window, offering glimpses that might resonate, surprise, or shift the way you see your own journey.
This week, we’re joined by Catalina Mejía, creator and host of the podcast Convos with Sazón. Residing in New York, Catalina leads a weekly, interview-based series that spotlights trailblazers across all industries—their journeys, and the unexpected twists and turns along the way. You can catch new episodes every Wednesday on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
What was your upbringing like around money?
I admittedly had a very privileged upbringing in the sense that nothing was missing. It was always clear to me that we were comfortable as a direct result of my parents’ hard work. My brother and I always knew the value behind everything we were afforded, the importance of saving and being conscious about what we decided to spend on. It was a delicate balance.
When did you first feel financial responsibility?
Study abroad in college. My parents set the expectation that I would pay them back for my weekend trips and discretionary spending (they ended up gifting it all to me later, but planting that seed early on made me more intentional about how and where I spent money that semester). After that, I didn’t feel fully financially responsible until I moved away from home — across the country — for my first reporting job. Around that time, we set up a Roth IRA and my 401(k), which brought financial literacy and responsibility to the forefront.
How has being first-gen shaped the way you think about money?
It’s inspired me to set up future generations in my family for success. The idea of generational wealth is something I constantly think about and a “code” I’m trying to crack, because by my parents coming here (from Colombia) first and setting us up for success, that seems like the next step for us to pick up from.
What purchase brought you joy, or made you pause or second-guess yourself?
A purchase I will absolutely never regret and continues to give me an immeasurable amount of joy is my dog. However, the vet bills are INSANE!
Did you make a choice you wouldn’t normally admit to — a splurge, shortcut, or small rebellion?
I’ve given into luxury purchases — a Cartier “Love” ring (following my master’s graduation) and bracelet, in addition to designer sunglasses. I had worked hard and deserved memorable treats. Aside from the sunglasses, I still stand by those decisions.
What’s a spending habit you’re proud of — and one you hide?
A spending habit I’m proud of is learning how to keep track of my purchases. One that I hide is that I keep track of them as they’re happening, instead of preemptively setting a budget to stay within. I’m very much still learning how to budget.
If you could give your younger self financial advice, what would it be?
Continue to invest in a Roth IRA and 401K as soon as possible. I’m SO grateful that I did so early. I would also look into a high yield savings account.
