NEW YORK, NY – AUGUST 28, 2025 – URL Media is proud to announce Pittsburgh Latino Magazine and BK Reader as the newest members of its network of high performing Black and Brown media outlets. Pittsburgh Latino Magazine, founded by Maria Manautou-Matos in 2020, expands the network’s reach into western Pennsylvania. BK Reader, the digital daily news site founded by C. Zawadi Morris in Brooklyn, deepens URL network coverage of New York City.
“We are thrilled to welcome Pittsburgh Latino Magazine to the URL Media network” said URL Media’s President Sara Lomax, who also is president and CEO of WURD Radio in Philadelphia. “Pittsburgh is Pennsylvania’s second largest city, representing a critical economic, political and cultural engine for the state. Providing necessary reporting about the Latino community in this vibrant region of this important swing state, is an invaluable resource.”
Pittsburgh Latino Magazine is the only bilingual print publication serving Latinos in western Pennsylvania. Its coverage is multi-platform, with its website reaching over 170,000 visitors since launch and its print edition reaching 37,500 people with each issue. Its bimonthly coverage serves intergenerational families with news on local businesses and restaurants, real-life impacts of legislation, and opportunities to plug into Latino community spaces.
Manautou-Matos sought out to create the resource she wished she had when arriving to western Pennsylvania more than thirty years ago. Her mission is to connect, celebrate and empower Latino communities, rooted in the specificity of place in Pittsburgh. The magazine is housed under Presente Pittsburgh Media.
“Pittsburgh Latino Magazine fills a critical void of Hispanic news and representation in Western Pennsylvania,” said Founder and Publisher Maria Manautou-Matos. “By partnering with URL Media, we are laying the groundwork for a stronger future—expanding our audience, strengthening our content, and securing a sustainable platform.”
C. Zawadi Morris sought to create a digital place for Brooklyn and by Brooklyn. She founded BK Reader in 2013, to celebrate and represent the diverse voices of Brooklyn’s 2.5 million residents. Notably, every writer and reporter featured in BK Reader is a Brooklyn resident.
“We know the importance of centering local, BIPOC voices and that is what BK Reader does, every day,” said S. Mitra Kalita, URL Media’s CEO and co-founder and publisher of the Queens-based Epicenter NYC. “The only way to cover the largest U.S. city in this critical moment is from the ground up.”
BK Reader reaches 175,000 website visitors each month for its business, health, lifestyle, policy, and local coverage. Its daily newsletter hits over 37,000 inboxes. Morris knew how critically important it was for the outlet to grow with its audience and regularly features emerging teenage writers in the Young Voices section.
“Partnering with URL Media provides BK Reader with the collaborative infrastructure it needs at this crucial stage of growth” said said Founder and Publisher C. Zawadi Morris. “As a network rooted in values of equity and inclusion, URL Media connects us to like-minded publishers, pooled resources, and revenue opportunities that strengthen our capacity to deliver high-quality journalism to Brooklyn.”
URL Media launched in 2021 with the goal to build a decentralized, multi-platform network that includes high-performing Black and Brown media organizations. Our members consist of exceptional news outlets representing a diverse mix of culture, format, geography and audience that amplify each other’s content and share revenue as a way to build greater sustainability.
Since its beginning with eight partners, URL Media has tripled its collective audience and significantly increased its revenue. URL Media recently announced the $1.25 million Press Forward Infrastructure grant to expand financial tools available to independent media entrepreneurs.
