Job Title: Executive Director

We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Executive Director to lead URL Collective through its formative stages and into a phase of growth and impact. The Executive Director will be responsible for overall strategic and operational leadership, ensuring the organization achieves its mission and fulfills its commitments to stakeholders.

About URL Collective

URL Collective is creating a more inclusive, informed and equitable media landscape. We seek to support local, diverse, grassroots media that serve the news and information needs of underserved, underrepresented and underestimated communities. 

URL Collective aims to provide editorial content and collaborations geared towards  alleviating poverty and promoting health and wellness while seeking to dismantle prejudice and bias in the media industry and beyond. Additionally, URL Collective will educate, empower and uplift individual content creators and small media organizations through training opportunities and business development support.

In 2024, URL Media co-founders, Sara Lomax and S. Mitra Kalita, formed URL Collective to focus on a subset of charitable and educational activities that uplift and empower diverse communities. Sara and Mitra are veteran media executives and entrepreneurs with deep experience disrupting digital content, advertising, business development and distribution.

Position Overview:

As Executive Director of URL Collective, you are a key thought leader in innovating and creating sustainability among community news outlets. You will lead the organization to:

  • Secure funding for the mission of URL Collective and establish internal policies and procedures.
  • Support diverse, early-stage community media organizations to build their business capacity and infrastructure.
  • Increase training and other educational opportunities for journalists and content creators who focus on diverse communities.
  • Increase coverage of health, civic engagement and economic opportunities in underserved communities; and increase dissemination of stories impacting those communities to mainstream media and platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Management:
    • Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the organization.
    • Oversee the daily operations and ensure efficient functioning across all departments.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  2. Fundraising and Development:
    • Develop a fundraising plan and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies.
    • Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, and other funding sources.
    • Ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organization.
  3. Board Relations:
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and the organization.
    • Assist in the selection and evaluation of Board members.
    • Report regularly to the Board on organizational progress, financial status, and strategic initiatives.
  4. Financial Management:
    • Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and audits.
    • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and ethical standards.
    • Optimize resource allocation for maximum impact.
  5. Strategic Planning:
    • Lead the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.
    • Identify and evaluate opportunities for growth and development.
    • Monitor and evaluate the impact of programs and services.
  6. Program Oversight:
    • Ensure the effective delivery of programs and services.
    • Evaluate program outcomes and ensure alignment with the organization’s mission.
    • Innovate and implement new programs as needed.
  7. Community and Public Relations:
    • Serve as the face of the organization to the community, media, and other stakeholders.
    • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and government agencies.
    • Advocate for the organization’s mission and values.
  8. Human Resources:
    • Recruit, hire, and retain talented staff.
    • Oversee staff development, performance evaluations, and succession planning.
    • Ensure compliance with labor laws and best HR practices.

About you

We are looking for a nonprofit leader who understands and has experience navigating the nuances and needs of a new nonprofit entity, from setting culture to fundraising, to building a board to reporting compliance. You are also right for this role if you are passionate about the future of media, the role diverse media companies and creators play in that future, and fostering both a healthy and productive work environment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience (5+ years) in nonprofit management, with a track record of successful leadership and organizational growth.
  • Proven track record in fundraising. 
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape, including best practices, trends, and challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to inspire and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into action and drive results.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, fundraising efforts, and financial sustainability.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute nonprofit strategic plans.
  • A history of and commitment to furthering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in workplaces and in any previous industries in which you’ve worked.

Compensation

Range: $115,000 – 150,000 

Salary and benefits commensurate with experience and nonprofit sector standards.
