On July 30, United States President Donald Trump announced that the government will impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from India starting August 1. He also announced an unspecified penalty for India’s oil and arms trade with Russia.

“While India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” said Trump in a TruthSocial post. “They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

In a press statement, the Indian government said that it is studying the implications of this move and that it is committed to reaching a “fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement”: with the United States.
