Do you have a REAL ID? You’ll need one to fly within the United States starting May 7, 2025, although some other documents will also work.
You’ve probably heard about this enhanced form of identification more than once since 2005, when it was first legislated to boost national security after the September 11 attacks.
The Transportation Security Administration issued several deadlines over the years, but they were all pushed back for things like Covid-19, backlogs at Departments of Motor Vehicles, and state noncompliance.
This time around, though, the cutoff seems to be real. It could cause longer TSA wait times at first, and mean other consequences for you depending on your travel plans and immigration status. So, what do you need to know?
First, check if you have one already. A REAL ID card looks slightly different from the ID you may be used to carrying. It should have a star or flag in one of the corners, and/or say “Enhanced” on it.
If you don’t have one, you’ll want to get one as soon as possible. Especially before flying domestically, or if you regularly go into federal buildings. You can only apply for one in person. The price ranges state by state, but it is typically well below $100. Check your local DMV for an exact estimate and to set up an appointment.
A U.S. passport will work to get you on a plane instead of a REAL ID, and so will a few other documents. But if you use a Mobile Driver’s License, that has to be upgraded too.
One of the biggest changes is that you have to show proof of citizenship, permanent residency, or temporary residency to get a REAL ID. This policy is giving people with different immigration statuses pause about air travel, although as of now, a valid foreign passport will work for a domestic flight, Documented reported.
You don’t have to toss your old ID, since it can still be used for voting, driving, and medical care. But if you don’t have another accepted form of ID, TSA could turn you away.
