Former first lady Michelle Obama is sending a strong message: There’s no making nice with incoming President Donald Trump.
The office of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama announced Tuesday that Michelle Obama won’t attend Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C., on Monday, Politico reported.
However, “former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies,” the office revealed in a prepared statement.
Michelle Obama campaigned against Trump, the nation’s 45th president and incoming 47th, in stark terms, publicly questioning his integrity, his plans for the nation, and his fitness for the nation’s highest office.
While campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris, she had particular concern about how a new Trump administration might affect women’s health.
“To the men who love us, let me just try to paint a picture of what it will feel like if America, the wealthiest nation on earth, keeps revoking basic care from its women and how it will affect every single woman in your life,” she said, urging men to vote for Harris so they won’t have to “look into the eyes of the women and children you love and tell them that you supported this assault on our safety.”
Her decision to skip the inauguration comes just a few days after the former first lady also declined to attend the funeral of 39th President Jimmy Carter, at which protocol dictated for her to sit beside Trump. She attended the funeral of Carter’s wife, Rosalynn, in 2023. Trump did not.
