If you’ve been following Congress over the past few months, there’s no way you missed Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Even if you weren’t paying attention, she caught the eye of America’s politics watchers as a vocal agitator against not only Donald Trump’s policies, but his whole administration and legislative loyalists.
And if we’re being honest, she’s been a thorn in the side of the establishment who might turn out to be a switchblade as the Democrat sets her sights on one of the most important positions in Congress, but more on that later.
Crockett, 44, represents Texas’ 30th Congressional District. That means she serves 772,000 constituents who vote majority Democratic in a heavily Republican state. She’s been in office since 2023, having succeeded the late Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson.
The St. Louis native graduated from the University of Houston Law Center in 2006 and served as a public defender in Bowie County, Tex., before founding her own law firm, which became known for representing Black Lives Matter activists pro bono. That led to a run for the Texas House, where she served from 2021 to 2023.
Crockett’s first turn on the national stage was a fiery one. She clashed with Republicans during an impeachment hearing of then-President Joe Biden, accusing those legislators of hypocrisy because they ignored evidence of felonies of then-former President Donald Trump.
One of the Republicans she clashed with was Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, starting a recurrent volley of conflict between them.
Perhaps the best-known incident between the two women was made for social media. In May 2024, during a House Oversight Committee hearing, Greene told Crockett, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
Crockett jabbed back with her own ad-hominem comment, asking committee chair Rep. James Comer, “I’m just curious … If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
The descriptive “bleach blonde bad built butch body” phrase was one of the most popular memes of the year, repeated millions of times on social media, printed on t-shirts, and even remixed with the beats from Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
That led to more dustups between the two women. However Crockett became even more vocal after Trump was elected. She called out Republicans on multiple policies, clashing with Congressional leaders. She also took the fight to Trump himself, who called her a “low IQ person.” She responded on X: “Every time you say my name, you’re reminding the world that you’re terrified of smart, bold Black women telling the truth and holding you accountable.”
Now, Crockett may be headed toward one of the most powerful posts in the House, the ranking member of its Oversight Committee. She would replace Rep. Gerry Connolly, who is leaving due to his battle with cancer. According to Politico, she has her compass pointed toward being Connolly’s replacement.
What this would mean is Crockett, who currently serves as vice-ranking member, would be ranking member of one of the most powerful committees in Congress. Oversight is the body’s principal investigative committee and has wide jurisdiction and significant influence on Capitol Hill. The ranking member, while sitting one seat below the chair as the minority party, works with the chair to make sure the committee works correctly.
It is a position that younger Democrats have been eyeing in a wave of eagerness for a more fierce response to Trump’s administration. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton reportedly declined to run for the seat, as has Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. If the 2026 midterm elections flip the House in favor of Democrats, the ranking member would become chair and have a blank canvas to craft congressional policy to challenge Trump’s agenda.
With a vacancy coming, Crockett told Politico she is ready to “meet the moment.”
“Knowing that Rep Connolly doesn’t plan to seek re-election & knowing that our oversight powers are broad,” she wrote in a text to Politico, “I’m ready to shine a light on the very dark things taking place in our country under this administration.”
