Mahesh Ganorkar (Republican Party), also known as Max, is running for the U.S. House to represent North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District. He will appear on the general election ballot on November 3, 2026. The Republican primary, originally scheduled for March 3, 2026, was canceled. In an interview with India Currents, Ganorkar shared his personal views on his campaign and priorities for his district.
Why he is running for office
The American Dream should not be limited to becoming a successful immigrant or a model minority. It should also include participating in the civic process. Hindus, like all Americans, should engage in shaping policies that make America stronger, not weaker.
I hope my candidacy encourages Hindus to consider why they may find it in their best interest to associate with the Republican Party rather than the Democratic Party. The media has often taken statements made by some alt-right members of the Republican Party and painted everyday Republicans as hate-mongers. The rhetoric that has emerged from the Trump 2.0 administration has also strained relationships between India, Indian-Americans, and many Republicans. It has further contributed to a climate in which many Republicans prefer to stay below the radar rather than risk criticism from within their own party.
Many Hindus identify with the Democratic Party by default because they view it as more caring, tolerant, accepting of diversity, educated, and open-minded. However, much like the Congress Party in India, the Democratic Party in the United States includes socialist and Islamist political currents. Hindus have experienced the consequences of both in India. If they allow emotion, rather than careful consideration, to guide their political choices, they risk undermining opportunities for future generations.
His primary role as a congressman
My primary responsibility is to defend the U.S. Constitution. I want to help create a pro-growth environment by reducing unnecessary taxes and regulations so that individuals and businesses have the freedom to pursue the American Dream.
Indian-Americans are entrepreneurs and small business owners who own hotels, motels, gas stations, convenience stores, and franchise businesses. They stand to benefit significantly from policies that encourage economic growth and reduce government burdens.
We must also support law enforcement policies that make our cities, state, and country safer by combating drugs, gangs, and violent criminal activity. Indian-American families, homes, and businesses, like all Americans, benefit from safe communities.
These are common-sense policies that benefit every American, regardless of race, color, creed, or religion.
His 1-minute pitch to voters
We cannot allow America to become the kind of socialist system that many immigrants left behind. America became prosperous because it embraced freedom, opportunity, and individual initiative rather than socialism.
Growing up in India, I witnessed shortages in jobs, basic utilities, and even food. Socialism also changes human behavior by making people increasingly dependent on government rather than encouraging individual initiative and self-reliance.
America offers something different. If you play by the rules and work hard, anyone can pursue the American Dream. Our rights do not come from government—they come from our Creator, who endowed us with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
As your representative in Washington, D.C., I will work to protect the Constitution and preserve the American way of life for future generations.
His priorities for his district
North Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District is remarkably diverse. It is home to world-class universities such as UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, the innovation hub of Research Triangle Park, the growing community of Chatham Park, and agricultural communities throughout Orange, Chatham, and Durham counties. It includes affluent suburbs in western Wake County as well as neighborhoods facing significant economic challenges. It is also home to people from every corner of the world alongside families whose roots in North Carolina go back generations.
My life experiences uniquely prepare me to represent this diverse district. Growing up on a farm helps me understand the needs of our agricultural community and the importance of expanding North Carolina’s agricultural exports.
Through my wife’s education and career in pharmaceutical research, I have gained an appreciation for the importance of research and development and the role our universities play in driving innovation.
My international business experience helps me understand what businesses need to grow, create jobs, and compete in global markets.
Perhaps my most meaningful experience was serving as a stay-at-home father. That role taught me the importance of strong families, quality education, lower taxes, and reducing the financial burdens facing working families.
The major challenges in his district
- Rising housing costs.
- The widening gap between wages and the cost of living.
- Expanding opportunities for wealth creation through homeownership.
- Access to quality education regardless of ZIP code.
- Helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed.
- Making healthcare more affordable.
- Keeping neighborhoods safe.
What sets him apart from his competitors
My opponent is a career politician. In my view, she has not presented innovative solutions to address the challenges facing our district. Because the district is considered politically safe, I believe there is less incentive to engage directly with constituents or pursue bold policy ideas. I also believe she has consistently supported her party’s agenda rather than offering independent solutions for the people of North Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District.
I am offering new ideas focused on improving affordability, expanding opportunity, strengthening families, supporting small businesses, and helping every American pursue the American Dream.
His personal story
I approach life with optimism, gratitude, and an abiding faith in God’s grace. Born in a small village in India to loving parents in a prosperous farming family, I came to the United States in 1989 to pursue my M.B.A. In 1995, I married my college sweetheart, and together we are blessed with three children. The best years of my life have been the years I spent as a stay-at-home dad. Days that are not only filled with happy and sweet memories but also pain and great sacrifices while enduring financial challenges of living on one income. Shrimad Bhagwat Gita has been a great source of strength and inspiration for me and my better-half, Chaaya.

Our oldest son, currently an EMT in Chatham County, has been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill’s medical school and will begin in July 2026. Our daughter is preparing for the MCAT with plans to enter medical school next year, and our youngest son is a licensed general contractor working in the family’s construction business.
Professionally, I am a home designer and builder. My nickname, “Max,” originated on my construction site when a retired Marine and master framer, unable to pronounce my Indian name, good-naturedly shortened it. The name stuck with me.
Beyond my profession, I have long been engaged in civic life. I became involved in the Tea Party movement in 2009, concerned about America’s growing drift toward socialism and an erosion of constitutional limits. My activism led me to run for the U.S. Congress in North Carolina in 2022, 2024, and 2026 as a Republican candidate.
